I am not certain if this list is an appropriate site for my inquiry. If it is not, please excuse the intrusion. Even better, if this is an inappropriate list, I would greatly appreciate referral to appropriate resources. I do, nonetheless, look forward to participating in this list as I am greatly interested in disability related research and hope to be thusly engaged shortly.
Here in my inquiry:
Presently, I hold a traditional Masters degree in Occupational Education and have some 18 years experience in adult "special needs" ("disabled") education and vocational rehabilitation. Presently, I am employed by a large public university in the state of Missouri, USA, as an assistive technology support specialist. Essentially, my work involves assessing and training university students, faculty, and staff for accommodation via computer-based and other technological applications. I am interested in studying and researching applications of my current work for individuals with severe disabilities. Specifically, I would like to explore bringing university-based instruction and services to individuals with severe disabilities and who are virtually confined to home and/or healthcare institutions.
I am interested in study and research that will lead to a Ph.D. degree. I would like to pursue said study and research from the United States where I presently live and work. My foremost question here is, could someone refer me to a UK-based University where my goals might be realized? Ideally, I would like to conduct most of the study and research up front from the US with contact between myself and tutors/mentors via e-mail, surface mail, telephone contact ... with, perhaps, a brief residence near the end of the program. Is such a concept possible ... and practical?
