List member Ron Amundson, who does the wheelchair competition in the
Honolulu marathon (Dec 13), was the subject of an article in the Dec 9,
1998, Honolulu Advertiser. It appeared in the SPORTS section (pages C1 and
C4) and not in the poor ol' crip part. Some good quotes from Ron:
"Heroizing [philosophers are allowed to create new words] disabled
people is just an embarrassed, hypersensitive way of saying how horrible
you think their lives are."
Citing Christoper Reeves: "Lots of non-disabled people think he's a real
hero.... Barbara Walters loves Chris because he continues to insist that
he's going to walk again. Everyone knows this is bull, but Barbara and
most of the country love Chris for publically lying to himself about it.
It's considered noble and courageous to lie to yourself."
"Actually, I think all those four-hour biped marathon runners are
courageous and noble to spend all that time on the course. If they raced
wheelchairs, they'd be showered and rested rather than still miles out on
the road someplace."
