Liz and other CGFers:
I'm very glad to see this issue aired on the CGF list. The
harassment that Gill has endured is totally unacceptable; she has
dealt with it in a highly professional manner and she deserves our
admiration and support.
One of the problems I've encountered in confronting harassment
issues within an equal opportunities context is the institutional mentality
that insists on limiting its action and perceived responsibility to its own
membership, so one University will only deal with its own staff (a
problem where harassment is experienced from beyond a single
institution); the AUT is pretty powerless to deal with non-AUT
members; and so on.
I'm taking up this up with the RGS-IBG on Friday via the Equal
Opportunities Working Group, trying to push the issue beyond these
narrow institutional concerns. Hopefully we can achieve something
more than an anodyne statement that the RGS-IBG promotes equal
opportunities and is opposed to discrimination. Advice and comments
would be very welcome.
