<< Can anybody define "child" for Health Service purposes? At what age is
parental consent no longer required?
I had a case recently of a 16 year old female and a 17 year old male in an
RTA who didn't want their parents told. >>
Checked with one of our Medical Advisers about this. Over 16th birthday a
person can be considered 'adult' for the purposes of treatment. 12 to 16 one
can carry out medical procedures "...as long as the 'child' can understand the
situation and what is going to happen to them. Parents must be notified asap
however."
Obviously life preservivg treatment can be administered prior to consent in
all under16s.
