An interesting and somewhat late aside is that in Derbyshire, where (as
at many other places) many Wells are blessed annually (acka Tissington),
many locals do not regard their Wells as holy, rather it is the idea of
blessing the water itself that is important, and this does not bestow
any degree of sanctity on the place where it is found. When I was
touring the Well Dressings of Derbyshire a couple of years back,
collecting information for a program called the Holy Well Index, I so
many complaints from the locals who could not see how this related to
the Wells that were dressed, that I had to change the project name to
the Wells Index (forerunner to the NWI).
