I am looking into the use of the records of joint stock cemeteries in
assessing the health of the populations that used them. I have, so
far, concentrated on Tynemouth General Cemetery and the Westgate Hill
General Cemetery, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Both burial grounds
recorded the cause of death, the depth of the grave, and, quite
often, the occupation. In addition, Tynemouth's sexton noted the date
of death as well as the date of burial.
Were these two typical in the details they recorded? I would be very
interested to know particularly about other cemeteries with
records of depth of burial and/or the dates of both death and burial.
