Dear Colleagues and Map Friends
Some of you already know, but I thought I should
announce on lis-maps, that I am retiring from my post as
Head of the Map Division in the National Library of
Scotland on 31 December 1998. (But, I am not retiring
from my interest in maps, and shall remain a member of
those cartographic societies to which I already belong,
and shall rejoin lis-maps etc once I get my
telecommunications re-jigged at home). Because I have
a lot of annual leave to use up, I think I shall be leaving
this Map Library around 17-18 December.
My successor was officially announced here today, and I
can now tell you that it is Diana Webster, presently Deputy
Map Curator and Map Library Manager in the National Library
of Scotland. Diana will take up her new post on 1 January
1999. Many of you already know her from our Edinburgh 3 Day
Cartographic Events, or as the Scottish Contact in
'Cartographiti'.
Diana has particular interests in the history of surveying,
and the instruments used, and in Scottish hydrographic
charts, notably those by Murdo Mackenzie (Senior). She
has also produced nearly all our Map Library leaflets,
dealt with all requests for permission to reproduce maps
in this collection, and acts as Secretary to the Project
Pont Steering Committee, among many other things.
I have very much enjoyed my role in the National Library
of Scotland and have sent some of my views on why I have
enjoyed it to the Editor of Cartographiti as a possible
contribution. One of the greatest assets has been the
informality and friendliness of the map world....see my
comments in the next issue of Cartographiti where I hope
there will be some warmly tingling pink faces after reading
them! The other great asset is my super team of staff,
all 8 of them, mavericks one and all! Long may they
and the Map Library flourish!
Margaret
