Colleages
The Cataloguing and Indexing Group in Scotland (CIGS) has arranged the
following events:
1. Networked bibliographic control in Scotland - the future
11 December 1998
11.00-15.30
Room H6
Merchiston Campus
Napier University
10 Colinton Road
Edinburgh
There are many projects and developments currently underway in Scotland
which may have a significant impact on the standards, formats and workflows
we use for cataloguing library and other learned materials.
· The CAIRNS (Co-operative Academic Information Retrieval Network for
Scotland) eLib project is setting up a gateway to the online catalogues of
the Scottish HE institutions, some public libraries, and specialised
services such as BUBL, and has already identified a number of cataloguing
issues of strategic importance.
· The CATRIONA II eLib project has investigated management and library
issues, including access, search and retrieve, connected with teaching,
learning and research materials created 'in-house'.
· The use of non-MARC metadata formats, such as Dublin Core, is being
increasingly used for identifying and retrieving Web and other Internet
resources.
· Many library catalogues now have Web-compatible interfaces, or WebPACs,
which can allow seamless connection between catalogue record or metadata
and the electronic resource being described.
This seminar will describe these developments, identify issues relevant to
cataloguing and the creation of other metadata, and discuss their potential
impact on the way we catalogue, the standards we use, and the changing
requirements of those who want to find it for themselves. The seminar will
be lead by Gordon Dunsire, Head of Information Strategy and IT Development,
and Paul Cunnea, Cataloguer, of Napier University Library, which has been
closely involved in many of these initiatives. Other speakers are being
arranged.
Programme:
10.30-11.00 Arrival and coffee
11.00-12.30 Morning session covering CATRIONA II and CAIRNS
12.30-13.30 Lunch

2. Workshop: Cataloguing for WebPACs
22 January 1999
11.00-16.30
Room D19
Merchiston Campus
Napier University
10 Colinton Road
Edinburgh
Many library management systems have development Web-compatible interfaces
to the catalogue; these are becoming known as WebPACs. As well as allowing
access to the online catalogue from the World Wide Web, most WebPACs also
provide an integrated, seamless connection between a catalogue record and
the electronic resource which it describes, using the MARC tag 856.
Napier University Library has been developing its Ameritech WebPAC since
the beginning of 1998, and has amassed a great deal of experience in
cataloguing a variety of electronic formats, the use of ISBD(ER) for
descriptive standards, the use of UK/USMARC tags for description and
access, integration with print-based and other standalone resources, and
the technical infrastructure required to access Web-based resources.
This workshop provides a method for sharing this experience and expertise
and providing practical help on particular problems in implementing and
maintaining WebPACs. The workshop will be led by Paul Cunnea, Cataloguer,
supported by Gordon Dunsire, Head of Information Strategy and IT
Development, of Napier University Library.
The workshop is divided into two sessions, which can be attended separately
or together.
The morning session will provide a tour of 'live' WebPACs for those who are
unfamiliar with these products, including an explanation of the jargon and
underlying technologies and examples of good and not-so-good
implementations. The charge for this session will be £10-00 plus VAT.
The afternoon session will concentrate on the lessons learned at Napier and
examine the issues, problems and solutions in some detail. As well as the
items noted above, there will be discussion of Napier's use of the
Anglo-American Authority File (AAAF). The workshop leaders will try to
provide answers for specific problems, particularly if they are notified in
advance. The charge for this session will be £30-00 plus VAT.
Lunch will be available, optionally, for £10-00 plus VAT.
Programme:
10.30-11.00 Arrival and coffee
11.00-12.30 Morning session: Beginners' guide to WebPACs
12.30-13.30 Lunch
13.30-15.00 Afternoon session: Workshop with Napier WebPAC
15.00-15.15 Tea
15.15-16.00 Workshop + and summing up
The total charge for the whole day is £50-00 plus VAT; this includes
coffee, tea and lunch.
Numbers are limited and early registration is advised.
Registration is required by Friday 15 January 1999 to arrange catering.
