a conference in Italian Studies
March 27-28, 1999
Colubia University
New York City
The Italian Graduate Students of Columbia University will host a
conference to explore discourses of Youth and Age of and in texts, in an
Italian context, including comparative approaches.
The conference is open to papers which might address the following
questions: Can the works of a single writer or artist be read as a
continuum, a retrospective, or may they be considered on their own terms?
When does ageing begin and what constitutes youth? What is the interplay
between ageing and rejuvenation with respect to the restoration of
artistic works or the urban landscape? How do scientific technologies of
reproduction and anti-ageing relate to the construction of gender and the
body? What is the relationship between canonization and literary/
artistic ageing? How can we understand the many ways in which texts
construct and/or challenge concepts of generation, youth, and ageing?
Papers from all disciplines are welcome. Please submit a 1-2 page
