Cathy
Now you're talking. can't resist a quick off the cuff response. There
is a well established litewrature, some of it very dated now but well
worth starting with on the coming of state education.
Start with Richard Johnson in Past and Present, 1969 or 1970 as I
recall. Brian Simon of course, esp first two volumes. E.G.West's
efforts to discredit state education from the start. Then go to Pavla
Miller in History of Education, 1989, vol 18. Then use the two books
that came from Cultural Studies at Birmingham University, viz.
Unpopular education (this especially)and Education Limited.
There is no charge whatsoever for this priceless advice, but I'd love
to know what you make of all these when you've found them. In haste:
I can provide accurate references if you want them.
Cheers Roy Lowe
