I would agree with everyone's thoughts on Altavista etc. not implementing
the metadata for our purposes. Even if these search engines recognized DC
tags, they will obviously also retrieve pages that do not have DC tags and
produce large numbers of retrievals that are useless.
We are using DC as the basis for our tagging web resources and media so
that we can create our own databases to retrieve the information. Since
new standards that are being developed and implemented in industry, such
as DOI, are using DC as their template, we are fairly certain that DC is a
standard that will be supported and integrated into new systems.
One example of this is adding DC metadata to faculty course pages, where
faculty have the course syllabus online. These web pages now reside on
departmental servers, and may or may not be linked to department or
institutional web sites. By adding DC metadata tags to the html, we can
use the new software that is being developed to index these pages in a
database.
This process will allow us to get some control over institutional web
pages and allow easy access. Part of our process is to divorce ourselves
from the chaos that the entire web consists of, but use the technology to
allow individuals to design and deliver html, sound, video etc over the
web.
