My first thought is that you should read some of David Pye's work, a
designer and craftsman with considerable depth of thought as to the
making process. I list below those of his books that are in your library
at Coventry.
David Pye : wood carver and turner
London : Crafts Centre, 1986
location Lanchester MLL: 739.69 PYE
The nature and art of workmanship: Pye, David
London : Herbert, 1995
location Art ART: 739 PYE
The nature and aesthetics of design: Pye, David
London : Barrie & Jenkins, 1978
location Lanchester MLL 730.23 PYE
I am sure that in the art and design area they have much else that would
be useful to you, and you might look for articles by Christopher Frayling
(I suggest you try one of the CD-ROM databases of abstracts, and I think
there is one on the visual arts). Your library has the following:
Beyond the dovetail : craft, skill and imagination: edited by Christopher
Frayling
London : Crafts Council, 1991
location Art ART 739.042 BEY
Best wishes
