Hi All
This is getting exciting. Where to start?
I would never suggest that computers can replace but I do think that
they can extend. Remember simulation can be unpredictable, chaotic,
dynamic, etc.
Digital craft is not suprising because it can be imagined, to quote Ken
Parsons "this happens in my head". Ken was refering to the creative act
but the process of observation is creative in the same way.
We need to move towards what cannot be imagined or perhaps predicted.
A problem of craft design is that much of the visualisation is not
visual to quote Ken again "part of the delight of using wax is allowing
it to take its own paths as they lead to strange and unexpected
destinations". This suggests that there is no fixed image of what is to
be created there is another understanding which allows a responce to a
material, the visualisation is perhaps physical.
Watching the wax feeds the creative process, it is a sketching notation
that drives itself. This is a clear illustration of the way in which
craft design crosses a boundary between their internal perception and
the global perception (perhaps not the right words). As designers we
have tools for the self and tools to make it real.
