It must be November in Acedeme and craftrovia!
Code, not code - is not the issue. A pencil is a coding devise.
It is the qualitative aspect that is important.
I can spend weeks creating 'art' on my computer and be thoroughly
involved with it . It seems to have vibrancy and all sorts of
possibilities for translation into 3d reality. I then take a break and
spend the afternoon in the garden making a simple slate sculpture as an
idle fancy. On returning to the computer all I can see is a dead,
pointless environment where meaningless pixels sit like jaded tarts in a
cheap brothel. Gaudy and unattractive.
To design is to communicate as directly as possible with the medium or
media. It is to translate an idea as directly as possible into the
finished piece. Any process between the artist or crafter is a
calculation, development and/or exploration devise. The simulation
engine that works is called the brain.
I still use the computer - I even doodle extensively and press buttons
to see what happens but so far I have not produced anything using a
computer that was of any use to me except as an "In its own right piece
of computer or web site art/design. The computer does not allow me to
develop ideas that work beyond its boundaries. It is computer specific
because the world is infinitely more than computers.
note: Pencil and paper may be (sometimes) slower but they are a super
strong design tool
