Understanding the roles that communication can play is increasingly seen as
a fundamental part of learning. In this conference, key European researchers
will elaborate on their methodologies and their research to explore issues
in learning to model. This is a remarkable opportunity made possible through
European Union funding.
Learning to build and use models is an important component of the education
of Europe's students. Modelling entails many facets including knowledge of
the domain, knowledge about modelling, how to validate and verify models,
and how to debug and repair them. There has been a great deal of research
into various aspects of these activities but on the whole it has proved hard
to integrate the research results in any meaningful way.
Recently, new research frameworks take into account communicative aspects
involved in learning. Research results in this area have stressed the roles
of dialogic, argumentation, belief revision, collaborative (and cooperative)
dialogue, communicative acts and conversational transactions. Along with
these perspectives on communicative interactions has gone a development of
specific techniques derived from researchers in the fields of cognitive
science, artificial intelligence, linguistics (including computational
linguistics), didactics, and various branches of psychology and sociology.
These recent advances in understanding the interaction between modes of
communication and the content & process of modelling provides both a
challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is to utilise the different
perspectives on communicative interactions to make sense of the research
previously done on modelling itself and to create a new synergy between
researchers from different disciplines. Hence the opportunity that is
provided by the proposed conference is to bring together key researchers
from the relevant fields along with young researchers to seek to provide new
insights into the state of the art.
The conference aims to provide both a better theoretical understanding of
the processes at work, of the techniques that can be deployed and of how we
can ``engineer'' the social/computational/didactic environment to help
students build and use their models.

Why Attend?
* Young researchers will be able to discuss their work with some of the
leading figures in this multidisciplinary area, and can, if eligible,
obtain financial support from the organiser. See below.
* All participants will have the opportunity to participate in the
talks, debates and other activities
* A further intention is that the workshop should be used to develop a
book provisionally entitled The Roles of Communication in Learning to
Model. (A further possibility is a special issue for a Journal.)
* Corsica is one of the most beautiful and remote areas of
Mediterranean Europe. It is worth considering using the opportunity
of having a few days extra visiting this spectacular island.

Financial Support
If you believe that you qualify for financial support then please apply as
soon as possible, and no later than January 31st 1999.
Application is formally made by filling out the form below and providing a
brief justification for support.
Justification for support can include: the area of your current research,
recent relevant publications, and any additional reasons that you feel
might help. Please use the registration form below.
To gain financial support from funds provided by the EU TMR programme then
some requirements have to be satisfied:
Age Researchers must be aged 35 years or less at the
time of the event. Researchers above this age limit
can normally only benefit if they participate as
speakers.
Qualifications Researchers must be doctoral students or holders of
a doctoral degree or equivalent qualification.
Nationality Researchers must be nationals of a Community Member
State or a State associated with the Programme
(Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Norway).
Finance Candidates fulfilling the above mentioned
requirements can apply for support as follows:
* Young researchers may be supported on a full
cost basis (i.e. travel, subsistence and
conference fees up to 100%)
* Speakers and teaching staff are entitled to
receive TMR support up to a maximum of 50% of
their expenses.
