PROGRAM
The three day Congress will present many diverse views on a range of
pertinent subjects. Day One will challenge our perception and the role of
design both today and in the future. Issues which cover the social and
cultural aspects of design, as well as our responsibilities as designers.
"Searching - Sustainability and Competition" is the overall topic of the
day. The opening address will be from Dr Lowijta ODonoghue, who is a
commentator on Australian indigenous culture and society. Speakers will
make separate 30 minute presentations to all delegates followed by a panel
discussion, with questions from the audience. Both international and
Australian speakers will consider the topic of the day across the
discipline areas in breakout sessions.
The list of topics to be covered will include: "A business decision or
creative imperative"; "Corporate interior design equals corporate image";
"Brains vs computer"; Design for business"; "Are the graduates we get the
graduates we want?"; and "Managing the creative spirit".
The topic for Day Two is: "Understanding Today - Enterprises, Government
and Design". Fortuitously, Sydney will be hosting the Olympic Games in
2000, so this day will be spent covering all aspects of the Sydney
Olympics. International and Australian speakers will cover such areas as:
"Olympic Building and Interiors"; "Olympic Industrial Design"; "Olympic
Graphics and Look"; "Olympic City"; "Olympic Torch"; "Olympic Merchandise
and Products"; "Olympic Ceremonies"; "The Olympic Games and Public Art";
and "Paralympics". A video presentation will precede the discussions.
The Olympic Design Sessions are an official event in the Olympic Arts
Festival program of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Also on Day Two is the presentation of papers selected pertaining to the
Congress themes. Three sessions have been allocated for possible workshops
in the following areas: "The young generation - a new language"; "Design
and the law - Strange bedfellows"; "How do visual signals communicate?".
Day Three of the Congress will consider "Enjoying the Journey - the next
10 years". This is the closing day and will explore how designers will
approach the challenges of the new millennium and its relevance in a world
of constant and immense change. A panel discussion of "Design without
frontiers - how we visualise the future in a global environment", will
precede the presentations from both international and Australian speakers.
Their topics will cover: "How will design be practiced in the next
decade?"; "The psychology of interiors"; "Humanising the digital image";
"Ask the Consumer!"; "The Design School of the future"; "Managing design
in young economies"; and "Will design and designers succeed?". Finally,
