Understanding work and designing artefacts

Special Issue of the
International Journal of Human-Computer Studies

Call for Papers

In recent years there has been a movement in HCI, CSCW, and 
requirements engineering that recognises the need for methods and 
models for studying work practice in order to inform the process 
of requirements gathering and the design of workplace technology.

This move has been reflected in the development and application 
of a number of theories such as distributed cognition, activity 
theory and situated action theory, and also in the development of 
methodological approaches such as contextual design, 
scenario-based design and participatory design.  The degree of 
interest in forging connections between studies of work practices 
and the design of technology to support work was highlighted by 
the level of interest shown in a recent workshop held in York.

The aim of this special issue is to bring together ideas and 
innovations, particularly with respect to the question of how 
work study methods can be used to inform interactive systems 
design.  Submissions are sought in areas including (but not 
limited to):

   - theories and models of work (including distributed cognition, 
     ethnographic approaches, and activity theory)
   - moving from work studies to system requirements 
   - artefacts and the distribution and coordination of work 
   - representations of work and representations at work 
   - engaging users in moving from work practice to design

 4 December, 1998    Deadline for paper submissions 
 1 February, 1999    Notification of review results 
 1 April, 1999       Deadline for revised papers

Note that these dates are provisional, and may change in the near

Submission process

Papers should be submitted in the IJHCS format, and will be 
refereed in the standard way.  Authors of submitted papers may be 
invited to take part in the review process. Details of the IJHCS 
format can be found in the journal, and are available from 
http://www.hbuk.co.uk/ap/journals/hc/.  Authors should submit six 
hard copies of their paper, or an electronic copy (preferably in 
RTF, Postscript or PDF formats) by email, with full contact 
details, to the address below.
