CALL FOR PAPERS
for the
2nd International Workshop on Presence
Organized by ACTS TAPESTRIES (AC055)
on 6 and 7 April 1999 at the
University of Essex, Colchester, UK
Academics and industrialists with an interest in presence research and
applications are kindly invited to attend the 2nd International
Workshop on Presence.
We aim to provide an open discussion forum in which we can share
fruitful concepts for presence research, useful measurement
methodologies and discuss applications in areas such as virtual
environments and new broadcast media.
A central goal of the workshop is to bring together academic
researchers in the area of media and presence, content and technology
developers, and commercially interested parties so that they can meet,
learn from each others experiences, present their research, and
exchange ideas.
This two-day workshop will start with plenary paper presentations
providing a good overview of the state-of-the-art of current research
and needs for future research. Subsequently, small workgroups will be
established discussing specific topics, i.e. co-presence, definition
and measurement, and specific application areas. These workgroups will
be asked to report back to the plenary session on the second day to
enable a broad discussion. The afternoon will be reserved for free
discussions and the opportunity to sample some presence-enhancing
technologies.
The 2nd International Workshop on Presence, a follow on from the 1st
International Workshop on Presence in Shared Virtual Environments (June
1998, BT LABS) is to be held at the University of Essex, April 6th and
7th, 1999.
Potential contributors are invited to submit a URL before 1 February
1999 via e-mail to Jonathan Freeman ([log in to unmask]). This URL
should point to an HTML document containing an extended abstract (no
more than 4 pages) of the work to be presented. The organizing
committee will review submissions and will notify the contributors
before 1 March 1999.
Further information regarding the workshop, e.g. submission,
registration and accommodation, can be found at:
