The Government is committed to introducing provision for parental and family
leave by December 1999 and is expected to consult on the detailed regulations
after the New Year. This major one day conference will examine the
proposals, see how effectively they will meet the needs of children and
families, and discuss what they mean for employers. The conference will
consider the experience of other EU countries (in particular Sweden) and
report on the findings of a Children in Scotland study on the leave
requirements of parents of children with disabilities/special needs.
The conference will be of interest to employers (particularly personnel
departments), Trade Unions, parents, elected members and senior local
authority officials as well as representatives from public agencies and
voluntary organisations. It will be chaired by Morag Alexander, Director of
the Equal Opportunites Commission in Scotland and Chair of Children in
Scotland's National Early Years Advisory Group. Highlights include:
Government proposals and insight into family-friendly policies
by Mary Pooley, Team Leader, Childcare Unit, DfEE.
Perspectives on parental and family leave from Sweden by Philip Hwang,
Professor of Applied Psychology, University of Gothenburg.
Viewpoints from Yvonne Strachan, Regional Industrial Organiser for T&G
Scotland, STUC Womenis Committee, and from parents and employers.
Providing for diverse needs: issues and requirements relating to parents of
children with disabilities/special needs, adoptive parents, single parents
and multiple-birth parents. This session will include a report on the
Children in Scotland survey of the leave requirements of parents of children
with disabilities/special needs. Chair: Christine Gowdridge, Maternity
Alliance. Contributors: Ian Maxwell, One Parent Families Scotland and Sophie
Pilgrim, Children in Scotland.
