Research on the Americans with Disabilities Act
My name is Melanie Panitch and I am a CUNY doctoral student at Hunter
College School of Social Work.
I am researching the ADA and am interested in the internal debates and
strategies employed by disability groups and activists as they
struggled
to frame the arguments, establish coalitions and mobilize their grass
roots members to push for the legislation. Given the political context
in
which the ADA was passed - a period notable for the undoing of social
accords involving women, the poor and people of colour, and for its
ideological perspective opposed to expanded social welfare and big
government I would like to explore the extent to which notions of the
"worthy poor" may still have operated in gathering support for this
bill.
I am also interested in the manner in which the disability movement
articulated their position in playing to a bipartisan congress,
balancing
between a liberal sense of responsibility to protect disadvantaged
populations, and the conservative value on self-reliance and
independence, and how in the process, they came to be perceived as a
serious social force.
Any references, source materials, leads, interviews would be enormously
welcome.
