The Fifth International Conference on Persons organized by the
International Forum on Persons will be held at St. John's College in Santa
Fe, New Mexico, August 3-8, 1999. The conference is interdisciplinary and
seeks papers from scholars and thinkers in all disciplines and traditions.
Possible themes will include, but will not be limited to:
**Philosophical issues surrounding the concept of personhood -- personal
identity, mind-body-relations, persons and their relation to the impersonal
or sub-personal, etc.
**Personalist philosophies-- American, European, Religious, etc.
**The moral and social life of persons -- persons and communities, persons
and medicine, persons and pedagogy, etc.
**Studies in the historical development of the concept of the person
**Emerging perspectives on persons-- feminist, African, social
constructivist, etc.
**Persons and the social sciences (e.g., a focused look at how the social
sciences have shaped current concepts of persons).
The conference will include keynote speakers, paper presentations, panel
discussions, work-in-progress sessions, and workshops.
The conference will be the fifth in a series of biannual conferences
organized by International Forum on Persons. Previous conferences held in
the United Kingdom, United States, and the Czech Republic have seen the
formation of an international community of scholars who share a commitment
to exploring issues that confront persons in an age of increasing
depersonalization, and who live and work in contexts that undermine the
significance of the personal. As with the past conferences, plans are
being made to publish selected papers from the conference.
Those interested in presenting their work at the conference should submit
completed papers (of no more than twenty minutes presentation time),
abstracts (500 word limit) of work-in-progress, or proposals (limited to 1
page) for panel or workshop by January 10, 1999. Papers, abstracts, or
proposals should be submitted to:
