I think it is folly to think that any of the professionals on this
list are unwilling to help students or there fellow collegues. I thought
that it was pretty clearly stated that "...it is a pleasure to assist.."
with, of course, the following hints to propriety and politeness.
Dr. McSiff writes:
>
While it is a pleasure to assist any dedicated students and seekers after
knowledge, professionals on the web always tend to respond more rapidly
and
helpfully if students:
1. Identify themselves and the Institutions where they are studying
2. State the research topic and the degree for which it is being submitted
3. Summarises sources of information already consulted and their value or
limitations regarding the research topic
4. Thanks anyone or the entire group for any help given
5. Posts a summary of information and/or a list of references obtained
from
list
members
6. Writes in a professional and respectful tone
7. Submits letters subdivided into paragraphs, using sentences of limited
length,
using capitalised headings for subsections if the material is lengthy
and
never
writing a whole letter in capitals.<
Everybody should feel that they can openly ask for help, insight, or
guidance in their projects and such. I think that it is implied within
Dr. McSiff's message that you would learn more and even be impressed with
what you learn on your own before asking for help.
I think it would be equivalent to the difference between students who come
to lectures prepared and have read assigned material before coming to
class and those students who just come. The first group generally is able
to contribute to discussions and able to absorb more out of the lecture.
The second group...again, generally...is picking things up for the first
time and may not receive as much as they could have.
The correlation? I think Dr. McSiff's is saying that if you ask after
already having searched, the material and the help that is given would
make more sense and would be of even more efficacy to you personally.
