The Australian Physiotherapy Association has a policy statement and
guidelines regarding physiotherapy assistants, ratified in 1990.
Drawing from my experience working in the States, the terminology
(physiotherapy assistant) is confusing as the Australian PA (they used to be
called aides) is not trained to the same degree that the American PAs are
and the Australian PA must work under close direction of a designated
physiotherapist (registration act). They cannot under any circumstances,
substitute for a physio in assessment, diagnosis, programme planning,
programme evaluation or client/family education.
The policy states:"The following activities may not be delegated to a
physiotherapy assistant under any circumstances. Thus a physiotherapy
assistant may prepare for but not apply:
Diathermy, magnetic field therapy, microwave, interferential, ultrasound,
electrical stimulation (other than TENS and FAS), ultraviolet, acupuncture,
dynamometers, traction - mechanical and manual, passive movements as defined
in joint manipulation/mobilisation techniques, laser.
They may supervise the safety of clients receiving these modalities........"
etc etc
The rest of the document covers education, supervision, role &
responsibilities, ethical principles, employment,
There is no official ratio of PA to physio or to client.
