Not long after I sent through my comments on students sometimes doing
insufficient thinking or research before asking for help on the Internet,
precisely the same thing has happened again. Obviously, all the discussion
which followed made no impression in some quarters. I was flamed by some folk
who said that I was being nasty and imagining things, but read for yourselves
the exact letter in toto (only names and topics omitted to keep personalities
out of the discussion) and judge for yourselves:
>Hi I'm a xxxx student doing a study on "xxxxxxx" there seems to be very
little >research in this area, I would value any information concerning
previous studies >which have looked at this, or related subjects Thanks.
***That's it! No name, no institution, no details of anything; just a request
for us to do the dirty work! Had that student bothered to use some of those
many web resources which I and others had suggested, he/she would have
discovered more than enough to go on with. And if any searches had indeed
proved fruitless, that could have been mentioned, so that we could have helped
with others which may not have been consulted.
To the critics of my original list of suggestions, do you still think that I
exaggerated the situation?
