Introduction to the Internet for Medicine and BioScience

The Internet, encompasing tools such as email, file
transfer and the World Wide Web, is the backbone
behind the information revolution taking the world
by storm. Information networked world wide using the
Internet, combined with the communication facilities
available on an international scale, offer educational
and commercial possibilities previously unimaginable.
This is a practical workshop for those with an interest
in medicine and bioscience who require an introduction
to networked information and communication.
It is suitable for medical researchers and academics and
subject librarians.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Participants will be able to take away useful Web addresses
and information found during the workshop on a floppy disk.
Topics covered will include:
* Basic networking skills
* Email and discussion groups
* Usenet News
* Use of the World Wide Web
* Tips on using Netscape
* Searching for and retrieving medical and
bioscience information
* Use of OMNI, the medical information gateway
* Retrieving inexpensive or free software
* The issues associated with using Internet services
By the end of the session, participants will:
* Have seen examples of Internet facilities such as file
transfer and email
* Have used the World Wide Web
* Have practiced specifying Web addresses and opening Web
pages
* Have 'surfed the Web' and explored medical related
information sites for
teaching and research
* Have explored the Yahoo! browsable subject index
* Have used some of the major search engines such as
Altavista, Excite and Lycos
* Have experience with searching and browsing medical
mailing list archives
* Know how to search for email addresses
Participants will also have an opportunity to:
* Try advanced searching techniques such as Boolean searching
* Explore software archives and the use of archie
(software search tool)
* Further investigate national information services
and resources
* Investigate the use of library OPACs (online public
access catalogue)
Workshop Requirements:
Participants need no special technical skills and no previous
knowledge of the Internet; however basic computer skills such
as using a mouse and keyboard are essential, and experience of
using Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files and opening
and closing applications e.g. a Word processor, would be helpful.
The cost of the workshop is 99 pounds for participants from higher
education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the relevant
fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
