Job Description

ESPERE is a collaboration which springs from a project funded under the
HEFCE Elib programme. It consists of a group of Learned Society
and commercial publishers including RCP Ltd., John Wiley Ltd, Blackwell
Science, British Institute of Radiology, British Society for Immunology,
Society for Endocrinology, Society for General Microbiology, The
Biochemical Society and The Royal Society. The project is researching
the concept of electronic peer review for biomedical and similar
graphics-rich articles. The project is concerned with (1) the problem of
easily assembling the users' data into files containing graphics and
special characters which reliably transfer across multiple platforms (2)
user- friendly transfer methods which are integrated with other data
required by the publisher (3) administration and management issues.
The project has been running for 2 years and technical work has been
handled by the Electronic Publishing Research Group, Dept of Computer
Science, University of Nottingham. BSCW (Basic Support for Cooperative
Work) software has been installed and made available for use by the
project and the individual publishers. Some scripts have been written to
allow the linking of an HTML Journal Submission form to the automatic
creation of workspaces.
The main technical activities of the project in the next year will be:
1. Support the use of the project workspace by participants
2. Establish workspaces for individual publishers' editorial boards and
support users. Carry out customisation work if required.
3. Establish workspaces for those publishers wishing to set up trial
peer review systems. Customise forms as required.
4. Participate in Formats Working Group
5. Participate in establishing interactive Web pages giving user help re
file formats (including PDF, HTML, XML, graphics formats)
6. Research the availability of format conversion software and provide
links/modified software where possible.
The server administrator will work under the supervision of Professor
David Brailsford (joint Project Director) and will report to the Project
Manager (Dee Wood) who is based in Clevedon (near Bristol).
Candidates should be prepared to undertake server
administration and be prepared to give extensive user support. Some
familiarity will be needed in the writing of server scripts (e.g. in
CGI, PERL, etc.) although further training will be given, related to the
specific needs of this project. Experience with some, or all, of the
following would also be advantageous: Word, Visual Basic, Graphics
packages,
Acrobat, Netscape, Internet Explorer, HTML, XML, Java script.
Candidates should preferably be in possession of a postgraduate
qualification in Computer Science and able to demonstrate experience of
Web site programming and administration.
Candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in Computer
Science, or those with other qualifications, may be considered provided
they have extensive experience in the topics set out above.
The post is initially for 1 year with possibility of extension. The
salary will be in the range £16,366 - £23,241 per annum
