This conference explores the presence of Italian poetry in America today.
It promises to be an historic occasion, bringing together three select
groups: some poets representative of contemporary Italian poetry written in
Italy, members of the community of Italian poets resident in the United
States - which is making its voice increasingly heard - and, finally, some
contemporary Italian American poets. Readings of Italian poetry will be
followed by English translations. The symposium will also include two
sessions in which literary critics discuss cultural and epistemological
aspects of contemporary Italian poetics in Italy and North America, and a
session in which translators of Italian poetry into English discuss their
work.
Poets include: Peter Carravetta, Alessandro Carrera, Patrizia Cavalli,
Rosita Copioli, Maurizio Cucchi, Alfredo De Palchi, Luigi Fontanella, Pier
Massimo Forni, Ernesto Livorni, Mario Moroni, Eugenia Paulicelli, Silvio
Ramat, Antonio Riccardi, Annalisa Saccà, Davide Stimilli, Joseph Tusiani,
Paolo Valesio, Cesare Viviani.
Critics and Translators include: Albero Bertoni, Andrea Ciccarelli, Keala
Jewell, Niva Lorenzini, Michael Palma, Graziella Sidoli, Richard Sieburth,
Ann Snodgrass, Luca Somigli, Lawrence Venuti.
"For poetry makes nothing happen: it survives
In the valley of its saying where executives
Would never want to tamper; it flows south
From ranches of isolation and the busy griefs,
Raw towns that we believe and die in; it survives,
A way of happening, a mouth."
