SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF SOIL ORGANIC MATTER
The British Society of Soil Science is pleased to invite scientists
interested in the study and management of organic matter in soils to an
international conference in Edinburgh organised by staff from the Scottish
Agricultural College and Macaulay Land Use Research Institute.
The functioning of soils is profoundly influenced by their organic matter
content. The ability of a soil to supply nutrients, store water, release
greenhouse gases, modify pollutants, resist physical degradation and
produce crops within a sustainable management system are all strongly
affected by the quality and quantity of organic matter that it contains.
It is also significant that organic matter quality and quantity are
characteristics of a soil that are sensitive to management. With the
uncertainties that surround the likely environmental impact of global
change together with the increasing importance placed by societies on
developing sustainable farming practices, an understanding of the
behaviour and management of soil organic matter has never been more
important.
AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE
This conference aims to explore the results of recent research studies
that have examined how organic matter functions in soils, factors
affecting organic matter quality and quantity, and how management of
organic matter can be optimised in order to achieve sustainable
farming practices. A publication based on the material presented at this
meeting will be produced by CAB International.
The Society in general and the organisers in particular welcome offers of
contributions (papers or posters) presenting new and interesting work in
this area, especially from younger scientists. Grants to aid attendance
at and/or contributions to the meeting are available from the BSSS to
student members, who should contact Jim Gauld, MLURI.
