Walt,
ATLAS.ti's next service pack (2) to be uploaded as a free update in late
October can handle large audio files of several 100 MB size, which is enough
for very long interview sessions. Segmentation resolution is on millisecond
level.
Access to segments via codes etc. is instantly regardless of the location of
the segment in the file. A special player device will make navigation
through giant files and creation of "quotations" very easy. A very useful
feature is using these audio segments hyperlinked to textual segments. In
the margin area besides the text you can listen to the hyperlinked audio
segments by simply double clicking. Same is true for audio segments included
in network views. Even is the segments stem from many different and long
audio files you will be able to hear the "snippets" instantly. Segments can
be continuously repeated (useful for transcription!).
In addition we are also working on video segmentation and are already able
to do a similar segmentation for sequences. However, we want to have a two
level segmentation here: level one for time sequences and level two for
image regions.
This will be either be made available with the next upgrade due spring 99 or
as a "plug-in" module for those in need of multi media knowledge management.
This plug-in will also offer access to audio tracks on standard audio CDs
(which may contain your interviews).

- Thomas
