We at SUNY Stony Brook are in the process of reviewing our first two years
of language instruction. At present, we use _Oggi in Italia_ as the
textbook in the first year of language (two semesters), and _Da Capo_ in
the second year of instruction (two semesters). What we have noticed is
that there is inevitable repetition between the first and second years of
instruction, with too much emphasis on grammar and little time for
conversation and the practical application of the language. One of the
changes we are considering is dividing up one lone text book over the
course of four semesters, which we believe would 1) allow us the time to
cover the selected grammatical concepts in more detail and give the
students more time for their practical application; 2) allow more time for
conversation; and 3) allow us to integrate a greater variety of supporting
materials (films, articles, the Internet).
We would be interested in hearing from anyone who has a similar program at
their university, or who learned Italian in a similar way. Messages can be
posted on the list or sent directly to [log in to unmask]
Grazie,
Jacqueline Reich
