Dear Joe Fenech,
What sort of answer would you like? A general essay on the book? Something
you could pass on to your students straightaway? I can think a myriad
thoughts about Il giorno della civetta. The relevant thing is: which ones
would be useful and interesting to YOU? What ideas did YOUR reading suggest
to you which you would like to discuss with list members? Does the book
(contents, language, style, structure etc.) raise any problems which you find
difficult to solve, and what are these problems? Whom are you teaching the
book to and at what level? Why are you teaching this book? (because it's on
the syllabus and you're saddled with it, because you like it and have chosen
it for your course). What are you teaching the book FOR? (language practice, u
nderstanding of Italian society, relating the book to the rest of Sciascia/s
production, comparing it with the movie, getting the kids through an exam
etc.). To know how to ask the right questions is just as important as seeking
the answers.
