The exception is where the water "container" is vastly deeper than
needed. The Great Turning Basin of the James River and Kanawha Canal
terminated in Richmond, VA. It was 3.5 city blocks long, nearly a block
wide and was up to 50 feet deep. We found a bridge built during
construction consisting of an upturned boat across a small stream! When
stuff went down in 50 feet of water, it tended to stay. We were able to
extract from the stratified deposits parts of at least 76 canal boats
and associated artifacts. Amazing collection awaiting funds to process
and write the report. Even then, there was an uneven distribution of
strata vertically due to water flow within the basin.
