Dear List Members,
As List owner I regard it as my responsibility to make sure that this
space is open, and welcoming of as wide a participation as possible and
to encourage the professional and scholarly exchange between historians
and others interested in the history of childhood and family. The
possibilities are endless!
I, like many historians here, present the psychohistorical view of the
history of childhood in my teaching along with as many other
perspectives as I can - allowing, I hope, the interested student to be
stimulated enough to question assumptions.
There is wide respect for this particular contribution to our
understanding of childhood history.
But this list's purpose is to stimulate discussion and debate and
bearing in mind the fact that we have such a range of experience
representing many different theoretical perspectives, I will do all I
can to encourage these to express themselves on this list. This is the
best possible function of this space, not the exposition of one
perspective repeatedly.
I would like to think that we can moderate ourselves - but if this one
perspective continues to be repeated at the expense of all others, I
shall be forced to introduce moderation formally.
I have many things to say about Clinton - but wouldn't dream of
inflicting them on this list; they belong elsewhere - in a list which
discusses the social construction of 'normal' masculinity, perhaps !
I hope this is clear .
Cathy
