DISABILITY SEMINAR: Spanning Identities
Access Plus is organising a one day seminar, Spanning Identities, to be
held on the 17th of October 1998. The seminar aims to identify barriers
to access to services and provide a forum in which people can share
their experiences of living with a disability.
The seminar program will explore the following areas:
-Equitable access to social, cultural and political life
-Domestic, sexual, institutional, homophobic and transgenderphobic
violence
-Images in the media
-Living in institutions
-Identity politics
It is intended that relevant papers will be the starting point for a
series of workshops to be held during the day.
We encourage people with a disability including PLWHA, to indicate an
interest in leading workshops or in attending the seminar.

WHAT IS ACCESS PLUS?
Access Plus is an organisation for gay, lesbian, transgender and
bisexual people with a disability including those with HIV/AIDS. Our
membership also includes representatives of disability, gay, lesbian
and transgender services, and government departments.
Access Plus began in 1997 in response to concerns about the barriers
and discrimination we have experienced in attempting to gain access to
both disability and gay, lesbian and transgender services on an
equitable basis. Access Plus is supported by the Gay and Lesbian
Anti-Violence Project and People with Disabilities (NSW).
MISSION STATEMENT
Access Plus is a lobby group which encourages access and equity for all
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people with a disability,
including those who are living with HIV/AIDS. We are seeking
recognition and support from the disability sector and the queer
communities.
OBJECTIVES
1.To establish a network of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual
people living with a disability including those with HIV/AIDS.
2.To develop a strategy to bring to the attention of government
agencies and departments and various disability services, issues which
are specific to lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual people with
disabilities.
3.The development of comprehensive access and equity policies for
people with disabilities wishing to gain access to lesbian, gay,
transgender and bisexual; organisations and their services, and
disability organisations and services.
MEMBERSHIP
Acccess Plus has grown rapidly and has a diverse membership which
includes people with a disability, government departments, disability
organisations and gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual organisations.
