CALL FOR PAPERS
ALTER/ASIANS
Exploring Asian/Australian identities, cultures and politics in an age of
crisis
18-20 FEBRUARY 1999, Sydney Australia
As we are approaching the new millennium, the terms 'Asia' and 'Asians'
have become intensely controversial and riven with conflict.
Internationally, the economic crisis across the region has not only
shattered the aspirations and livelihoods of millions, but also
destabilised national governments and unsettled the prospect of a coming
'Asian Century'. In Australia, the rise of Pauline Hanson's One Nation
Party has targeted people of Asian background as antithetical to Australian
national culture and identity, feeding into longstanding anti-Asian
sentiments in Australia despite official attempts to redefine Australia as
'a part of Asia'. This conference will provide an intellectual
interdisciplinary forum to explore the diverse and changing meanings of
'Asia' and being 'Asian' in these times of crisis.
We invite submission of proposals for 20 minute papers on themes such as:
o Asians in Australia/Australia in Asia
o Multicultural politics, race and ethnicity
o Transnational migration, diasporas and expatriate cultures
o Popular cultures and Asian cultural economies
o Performing Asia (with an emphasis on theatre, music, film)
o Networks in Asian/Australian cyberspace
o Economic crisis and its aftermath
o Urban spaces, cultures and politics
o (Re)imagining the Asia-Pacific
o (Post)orientalisms and (post)colonialisms
o Cultural studies/Asian studies: dialogues
Closing date for proposals (200 words approx.): Monday 16 November 1998
