Research Studentship in Analysis of Dynamic Medical Imagery
School of Computer Science and Electronic Systems
Kingston University

This collaborative project between the Computer Vision research
group in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Systems and
the School of Radiography seeks to combine expertise in computer
vision and diagnostic radiography to analyse dynamic medical
imagery of the deglutition (swallowing) mechanism acquired
from video-fluoroscopy. The primary goal will be the development
of segmentation algorithms for recovering dynamic surface
or volumetric models of significant structures in X-ray
video sequences. Visualisation and temporal modelling of normal
and abnormal dynamic structures can be used to identify areas
of dyskenesia (dysfunction) that aid diagnosis of nerve
damage resulting from cerebro-vascular accident.

As well as graphical visualisation of results, this project
is expected to draw upon and extend a number of
state-of-the-art techniques from computer vision and image
processing including active contours and surfaces, point
distribution models and boundary and region extraction.

The successful candidate will be supported by a strong and
experienced supervision team draw from both the Computer Vision
Group and School of Radiography which enjoys particularly close ties
with the nearby St Georges Hospital. The Computer Vision Group has
developed its research expertise in areas are diverse as automated
visual surveillance, cinematographic special effects, industrial
inspection and remote sensing.

Research duties will involve:

* Investigation and development of machine vision and graphics
algorithms.
* Programming of demonstration software in C/C++.
* The dissemination of results and the promotion of the
Schools' reputation through conference and journal publications.
* Collaboration with industrial and academic partners associated
with this project. Assisting in the development of grant
applications for future projects.

Person Specification:

The candidate should have a first/upper second class degree in
a mathematical, computer science or related discipline. While
a radiography background is not excluded, the central focus on
surface and volumetric dynamic modelling will require expertise
in applying mathematical surface models and significant levels
of programming. The post will involve collaboration with other
members of the Computer Vision Group and with the School of
Radiograpy as well as industrial and medical
practitioners.

Consequently, the candidate should be able to work well in a
team, have well developed verbal and written communication skills,
and be able to manage their time effectively given their wide range
of responsibilities.

At present, the bursary is for £7060 per annum paid quarterly
in advance.
