BATTLE OF SHREWSBURY, July 21st 1403
AD 2003 sees the 600th anniversary of what was arguably the most
significant battle fought on English soil. The battle was the first in
which the use of the English Longbow had occurred and the devastation it
wrought by introducing long range warfare to the medieval world cannot
be overestimated.
Not only did the battle establish Henry IV's claim to the throne in the
face of opposition from the Percy family and the Welsh, it also brought
young Prince Hal, later Henry V, to the fore. He witnessed at first
hand, the destruction of some 6000 men by the archers and took this
experience with him on campaign to France culminating in the great
victory over the French at Agincourt.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, Cultural Services Division, are
seeking to commemorate this important anniversary in many ways -
academic conferences, church services, theatrical performances (Henry IV
parts one and two by Shakespeare feature the battle), commissioned
music, activities with English Heritage and other bodies and events for
all to witness and take part in.
We welcome suggestions or offers of assistance at this early stage of
the planning. Information should be sent to the event co-ordinator,
Mike Stokes, Museums' Archaeologist, Shrewsbury Museums, Barker Street,
