Sure, but that's not true everywhere. I bought a house 3 minutes from the
hospital (it's in the same road!) and have attended and either run or
supervised a registrar running every trauma call on my nights on call. As
I do a 1 in 2 that means that on my week on there is no Consultant for
16/168 hours and on my week off 80/167. I tried to interest my General
Surgical colleagues in helping out (on a 1 in 5 rota) but after 3 months
they dropped out again citing excessive workload...
It's really much as my good friend Graham says. Mind you, this loyalty
bonus for Consultants looks interesting!

Look, it's easy. Does your proposal help my patient? If it does, then I
shall embrace it with all my heart. If it does not, go away and find
another proposal.
