I am a doctoral candidate, post-comp, in Art History at the University of
Iowa, Iowa City USA. At the invitation of Dr. Lieberknecht I have joined the
list since my dissertation seeks to establish Rodin's reliance on Dante's
Inferno as the basis of his monumental sculpture, the Gates of Hell. In the
process of examining this relationship, my work encompasses Dante's reception
and reinterpretation in 19th century French art and literature more generally,
beginning with the Romantic movement and continuing throughout the century
until we find its culmination in Rodin's Gates. I examine as well the
circulation and popular reproduction of Medieval and Renaissance illustrations
of Dante's Inferno in 19th century France, as well as French translations of
the Inferno available in 19th century France. I have presented my work at
several conferences in the United States, most importantly within Prof. Chris
Kleinhenz's Dante and the Visual Arts panel at Kalamazoo in May 1998. I will
be submitting articles for publication during this academic year, and plan to
complete my dissertation after further research in Paris. I would
particularly appreciate contact with any list participants working/living in
France, and with those of you on the list who anticipate conferences or
publications which might be suitable venues for my work with Dante in 19th-
century France. Thank you.
