IMHO, the metadata attached to a document is *not* the place to store
information like Author's contact details. Any attempt to do so, I would
consider a kludge of the highest magnitude - dangerous and misleading.
IMHO, any "STM" series of metadata tags would be up to that body to
describe and define - just as the "DC" series of tags is being developed by
the Dublin Core community.
>Well, I understand the objection to putting ephemeral information into
metadata, but this is a DC issue as well since I have certainly seen
previous suggestions from DC that "Address" be a subelement of
DC.Creator.PersonalName.
>"Affiliation" is different in the sense that it tells the reader where the
work was carried out. For example, if I write a paper and give my
affiliation as the Department of Metalinguistics, University of
Palookaville, this affiliation information is relevant wherever I then move
on to. It does actually give some status to the work.
>I agree absolutely that if the STM community has metadata requirements
that aren't covered by Dublin Core, it's up to us to work together to sort
something out. I also believe this is completely within the spirit of
Dublin Core's objective to be a minimal data set and to allow local
extensions. What I was objecting to was any attempt to shoehorn everything
into DC even when it's inappropriate, and especially any suggestion that
DC.Description can become a catch-all tag.
