Some image file formats have made provision for metadata:
* Flashpix, developed by Kodak and others, has an Image Info property set
with the following types of information: file source, intellectual
property, content description, camera information, per-picture camera
settings, digital camera characterization, film description, original
document scan description, and scan device. (Those are the classes; there
are several metadata items in each class.) See
http://www.digitalimaging.org for the official stuff. Flashpix allows
extensions that can store arbitrary properties--useful for metadata, but
requiring conventions outside the specification to achieve interoperability.
* EXIF, (a Japan Electronic Industry Development Association standard)
reuses the TIFF 6.0 specification for tags. EXIF also allows extensions
that can store arbitrary properties--but the same caveat as for Flashpix
applies.
* TIFF allows metadata such as ImageDescription, Software, Artist, and
Copyright (but it isn't quite general enough for Dublin Core metadata).
