7 Oct 1998 An introduction to QSR NUD*IST and Decision Explorer:
How might work in one software package usefully complement the other?
---------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of this course is twofold.
1. To create a framework of understanding of the independent use of the
two quite different analytic tools.
2. To focus on potentially complimentary uses of Decision Explorer and
NUD*IST.
The day will be split into a morning with NUD*IST and an afternoon with
Decision Explorer.
PROGRAMME OF THE DAY
Tutors: Jenny Brightman, Ann Lewins
9.30am -10.00 am Introduction: including an introductory look at
Decision Explorer:
MODULE 1: USING NUD*IST: CODING STRATEGIES
How might a project develop in NUDIST?
How will it lead towards the use Decision Explorer?
A mixture of presentation, demonstration and hands-on sessions.
(*Coverage in this module may vary according to the general experience
level of participants - some elements may be left out entirely)
The module MAY include
*the early work in a sample project *data Import:
*aspects of data preparation
*categorising and sorting - short cuts and basic ways
*coding tools *text search tools * question asking tools
*useful index structures
10.00am-10.45pm. A demonstration of the key aspects of NUD*IST
10.45am-13.00pm (including a 10 minute coffee break)
HANDS-ON workshop (varies according to experience)
Developing ideas about the data: applying ideas, retrieving text
Asking questions in NUDIST
Working in or out of the tree view.
MODULE 2: DECISION EXPLORER AS AN ANALYTIC TOOL: DECISION EXPLORER (AND
THE LINK WITH NUD*IST)
A mixture of presentation, demonstration and hands-on sessions.
2.00pm. - 2.30pm Introduction to mapping: background, theory and
practice
2.30pm - 3.30pm The basics of Decision Explorer data entry tea
(break for tea)
3.40pm - 4.30pm Structuring data and data analysis, working with data
from multiple sources
4.30pm - 5.00pm The NUD.IST/ Decision Explorer links, discussion of
other applications of Decision Explorer, review question and answer
session.
