I'm not entirely sure yet precisely what is meant by "catalogue level
descriptions" which I think is a term invented by eLib? (or UKOLN? or
FDI?). There is some stuff which comes fairly close to the ideas behind
CLD's (as I understand them) such as the work being done over the last
few years at Stanford - e.g. their InfoBus system which has a metadata
layer (GlOSS - Glossary of Servers Server) based on CIP ideas for
deciding which databases a search query should be sent to, as well as
broker layers (or proxies) for translating their CORBA based DLIOP
protocol to various search protocols such as Z39.50 etc. - in fact
covers much of the functionality of "uncoupling" the query interface
from the individual data sources discussed at the last MODELS workshop,
apart from they have (alledgedly) functioning software dating from 1996.
