It can be difficult to keep up with the pace of developments in today's
information arena. These sessions give you a chance to hear from the experts and
to ask them questions in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
Session 1
Tuesday 8th September
Building an inhouse digital store
---------------------------------
Presenter - Michael 'Alex' Alexander,
Document and Image Processing Systems, The British Library
Setting up your own inhouse cache of electronic materials needs careful
planning. Apart from issues of selection you need to address questions of access
and copyright and how best to relate it to your print collections. You need to
understand the implications of the different media formats and the role of
metadata in the digital library. You also need to consider how best to maintain
access to your documents as technology changes. This session will help you make
these decisions as well as covering what you need to do to maintain the store.
Session 2
Wednesday 23rd September
Keeping within the law in the electronic library
------------------------------------------------
Presenter - Reverend Graham Cornish
Copyright Officer, The British Library
Copying, storing and transmitting electronic material legally is a complicated
area. And just to make things even more demanding, the goal posts keep moving!
To bring you right up to date Graham will present an overview of all the recent
changes in the electronic arena which impact on the information profession.
Concentrating on the UK and European legal framework for copyright and data
protection he will also highlight significant developments worldwide.
