Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to invite you personally and your colleges to take part in
EVA’98 Moscow.
As you know, Electronic Imaging & the Visual Arts (EVA) is a series of
conferences in the frame of EC Project EVA Cluster. The international
event will be taking place for the first time in Russia and in East
Europe. It will be held in the conference hall of the State Tretyakov
Gallery 26 – 30 October 1998.
The conference is organized by VASARI Enterprises (GB) and Centre PIC
(Russia) with financial support of EC (DGIII) and with organisational
assistance from the Delegation of EC in Moscow. The conference theme is
"New Information Technologies in the Cultural Area. Co-operation between
Russia & the European Union". The main idea is to introduce to Europeans
the high cultural and technological potencial of Russia, to introduce to
Russians EC Projects and the Vth frame Programme and to find ways to EC
Projects in IT&Culture for Russian cultural, scientific and
technological institutions. From the Russian side this idea was
supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Science and
Technologies and the Ministry of Education.
Working languages – Russian and English, synchronic translation will be
provided.
About 60 papers are collected and the Program is in the process of
designing now. The Conference Proceedings will be published in Russian
(by Centre PIC) and in English (by VASARI).
During the Conference an exhibition of Russian multimedia on culture and
education will be organized, the leading Russian multimedia publishers
are ready to introduce their production. Illustrated Electronic
catalogue of the Exhibition in Russian and English will be published.
Cultural program will include visits to the Museums of Moscow Kremlin,
to the State Tretyakov Gallery, to the Museum of Fine Arts after
A.S.Pushkin.
If you find it interesting and possible to visit Moscow in October to
join EVA’98 Moscow, you must be aware of the information required well
in advance for a visa, namely:
Your name, date & place of birth
A copy of your passport (first 2 pages with photo)
The name of the Russian consulate where you will go for a visa.
Apparently the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send a personal
invitation to your Russian consulate. Only then can you go and ask for

Profile
The Centre of Informatization in the Sphere of Culture of the Ministry
of Culture of Russia (Centre PIC) was organised in 1992 from personnel
of the computer centre of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR, after the
USSR was divided into independent states, to investigate new information
technologies and to apply them in museums.
Centre PIC is a state research and design body subordinate to the
Ministry of Culture of Russia and works under contract with the Ministry
of Culture of Russia, with the Ministry of Science and Technological
Policy of Russia and with Russian museums and other cultural
institutions. In 1995 the Ministry of Culture of Russia organised the
Centre of Multimedia Technologies (as a subsidiary of Centre PIC) to
co-ordinate the efforts of different bodies connected with multimedia
publishing and distribution in culture and art. The Centre’s services
include evaluation of proposed projects and works-in-process. In
addition, the Centre prepares drafts for laws in the area of rights and
ownership of cultural properties.
The Centre develops and installs archiving and retrieval systems,
including images, in museums.The Centre also creates and produces
multimedia CD-ROMs in the areas of culture and art. The latest
multimedia CD-ROM projects of Centre PIC are "West European Drawing of
XIV - XIX centuries. Kunsthalle Collection in Bremen" (in Russian and
German) and an encyclopaedia of the works of 500 international masters
in the fields of painting, architecture and other fine arts (in
Russian).
Alexandr V. Chernych
Alexandr Chernych was graduated from the Moscow Institute of Electronic
machine-building specialising in computers. In 1975 he defended a thesis
"Design of integrated information processing systems" and has got Doctor
of Ph. degree. He worked as a professor in the Moscow Institute of
Electronic machine building for 12 years, after that he was the chief of
automated managment systems department in electronic industry for 10
years. In 1989 Alexandr became the director of the computer centre of
the Ministry of Culture of the USSR and then, after the computer centre
was reorganised in 1992 when the USSR had fallen into independant
states, he became the director of the Centre of Informatization in the
Sphere of Culture of the Ministry of Culture of Russia (Centre PIC).
Alexandr Chernych is managing all the projects of Centre PIC with the
main interest in on-line systems.
Leonid A. Kujbyshev
Leonid Kujbyshev was graduated from the Moscow Institute of
Radio-electronics and worked over design and installation of automated
documentation systems in tourist business. From 1989 he was a chief of
software department of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR and then,
from 1992, is the vice-director of Centre PIC. Leonid is a member of
the Russian branch of ICOMOS. He is one of the founders of the Union of
multimedia publishers and is now interested mostly in the problems of
"piracy", intellectual property and legislation in the sphere of
multimedia.
