I have since more than two years collaborated with Dr. Adeniyi
Gbadegesin. We met at the IGU Congress in the Hague in August 1996. We
have applied for a scholarship in order to be able to work together on
natural resource management in a number of African countries. Dr.
Gbadegesin is scheduled to arrive from Nigeria with KLM via Amsterdam to
Sweden on Tuesday 1st September. He has visa and residence permit for
Sweden for 9 months, 1 September 1998 - 31 May 1999.
I have this evening received a message (copy see below) from an e-mail
address which Dr. Gbadegesin has never used in the past (his normal
address being [log in to unmask]), in which it is stated that he
has received "a national assignment by his Excellency, the Head of state
General Abudul Abubakar through the office of the First lady of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria ...".
Is this an authentic e-mail or not? Is there anyone with experience of
Nigerian politics and Nigerian geographers who could assist me what to
do?

Dear Dr Lundskog,
I am writing to defer my arrival date to Sweden because of the recent
development in Nigeria. I have recently been given
a national assignment by his Excellency, the Head of state General
Abudul Abubakar through the office of the First lady
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The inauguration of up on the 1st of
September and by the government policy the head
of state is the visitor (Chancellor) to the University and you cannot
reject assignment from him. By the nature of the
assignment, it is to review a government program and should not last for
more them 2 months. Nevertheless I will give
you details on the 2nd of September I will fax the letter to you to
confirm.
I believed since I have a full ticket, my coming to Sweden could only be
delayed for about 2 months. I have already
packed before I received the letter yesterday.
Sorry for the inconvenience this might have caused you. So there is no
need to come to Stockholm on Tuesday again.
Please let me have your reaction to this message today.
Thank you
Dr Adeniyi Gbadegesin
