SESSION: THE EMANCIPATORY CITY

This session will explore the metaphor of the emancipatory city. This
metaphor is rooted in modernist texts, eg. Simmel, Benjamin, Marx, etc.
and has resurfaced in contemporary work on the postmodern city,
politics of identity, etc. The basic sense is that the city is an
emancipatory site because its diversity accommodates difference. But
the metaphor implies a complexity that is never really explored. This
session aims to both unpack and critique the notion of the emancipatory
city.
