Martin:
I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I would
recommend wandering through the information management section of
your computer bookstore. Several years ago, when I was getting
into database construction for the physio clinic, I enjoyed (yes,
enjoyed) reading:
Yannakoudakis EJ. The Architectural Logic of Database
Systems. Springer-Verlag. New York 1988.
Perhaps there is an updated edition. If you avoid the
language-specific examples, the book covers many of the basic
concepts:
User views
Redundancies
Characteristics of relational models.
Element associations
The book also has an excellent glossary so you can survive
the jargon programmers use.
We now have three in-house-developed data bases running. Two I
was involved in the development so I can give you some background
on the practical problems.
Good luck with your efforts.
