-----GENDERED SITES, HUMAN RIGHTS......GENDERED SIGHTS, HUMAN RITES----
Announcement of the
1999 Southern Regional Conference of the
International Geographical Union Commission on Gender,
Hosted by Department of Geography,
University of Otago, Dunedin, Aotearoa/New Zealand
DATES
Monday 8 February to Thursday 11 February 1999
VENUE
St Margarets College, University of Otago, Dunedin, Aotearoa/New Zealand.
CONFERENCE FOCUS, STRUCTURE AND SUBTHEMES
This conference is designed to address the current agenda of the IGU
Commission on Gender and Geography. We will explore the contested nature of
human rights and rites. In so doing, we will investigate the gendered
spaces and perspectives which enable a critical reading of these rights,
responsibilities and practices.
The conference committee invites outlines and abstracts from participants for:
academic papers, posters presentations, discussion panels, facilitated
practical workshop sessions and team presentations.
Four broad subthemes have been developed to stimulate thought and
encourage connections across the conference. Accordingly, we invite
academic and creative participation in any one of the following areas:
GENDERED SITES: including where we experience boundaries, performances
and negotiations of human rights, (e.g. the body - 'home' and/or
workplace - 'private'/'public' spaces - family - community - nation and
region)
HUMAN RIGHTS: signifying the rights, responsibilities and practices which shape the
quality of our lives and choices (e.g. access to all
types of resources and services).
GENDERED SIGHTS: indicating the situated knowledges, strategic approaches
and purposeful accounts we can mobilise (e.g. regimes of
representations, landscapes of access or protest over rights)
HUMAN RITES: signifying the practices and contestations of rights and
gendered life (e.g rites of passage within different arenas - opportunities
for strategic action)
MORE ABOUT THE IGU
The IGU (established in 1922) aims to promote the study of
geographical problems and to facilitate international co-operation in
research, among other aims. Every four years an international Congress is
held. Between congresses the scientific work is carried out by commissions.
'Gender and Geography' is one of these commissions, currently chaired
by Prof. Ruth Fincher (Australia).
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
We invite participation from academics, postgraduates, teachers,
community workers, activists, policy makers, and planners. In
particular, we hope to attract many scholars from the Southern hemisphere
and the Asia-Pacific region, since this will be an IGU Regional
Conference.
CONFERENCE LOCATION AND VENUE
Aotearoa/New Zealand is a particularly appropriate location for the 1999
IGU Gender Conference, with its historical and contemporary contestation
of colonial/postcolonial identities, land rights/rites and sights/sites.
The conference sessions and accommodation will be at St Margaret's
College, University of Otago. The University is New Zealand's oldest, and
the recently refurbished St Margaret's College was one of the first
women's residential colleges to be built in the Southern Hemisphere.
The University of Otago is close to the city centre of Dunedin. The city
is renowned for its historic architecture and lively student culture. It
is set in a landscape of green hills with a tranquil harbour and unspoilt
coves and beaches. Dunedin is located five hours drive south of
Christchurch and is served by regular domestic flights, bus services, and
a daily passenger train.
