The Candle Athens Integration Project is a new 2-year JTAP funded
project led by LITC at South Bank University.
This two year project addresses paragraph 10 of JISC Circular 2/98,
Harmonisation of Local Access. Its purpose to improve user id and
password management by demonstrating the feasibility of integrating
local access to networked information services at South Bank University
with access to JISC funded national services using the ATHENS
authentication service. It will eliminate the need for repeated entry of
user ids and passwords by users of networked information resources.
The project will make use of work under the EU funded Candle project
(http://www.sbu.ac.uk/litc/candle/) to develop an advanced digital
resource management system. It will also build on existing plans to
integrate access management services at South Bank University. The
project expects to demonstrate that an evolutionary approach to
harmonisation of local access is feasible.
Our first action has been to set up a Mailbase list lis-localaccess
which is intended to be the focus of discussions about single sign on in
relation to campus resource and national resource access, particularly
using the Athens service in the UK. The list description is:
For librarians and information systems staff to discuss the management
of access to digital resources. It will track developments of
the NISS' Athens service and efforts to harmonise it with local access
systems. Concerns will be identification, authentication,
authorisation, security, privacy.
We shall shortly be expanding the website at
http://www.jtap.ac.uk/projects/jtap-627.html (currently holding the
proposal) and carrying out a survey of current management practice in UK
HE institutions. We intend to contact all Athens administrators and
others developing hybrid libraries etc as well as advanced campuses.
I shall be on leave during August, but it would help us greatly if
anyone who wishes to receive a questionnaire or who has advice for us
would let Andrew Cox, Researcher at LITC on [log in to unmask] (tel 0171
